Letterbook kept by Joseph Sewall, merchant of Marblehead and Boston, Mass. containing retained copies of outgoing correspondence from 1796-1819 (with one loose doc. for 1795). Subjects include shipping and trading of goods in foreign markets, accounts, the capture of the schooner Jeremiah and the brig Mercury during the quasi-war with France (1798-1800) and subsequent claims against insurers and the French government (French spoliation claims) for damages. Letters from Boston after 1799 especially concern mortgages and land deals. Recipients of letters include Joshua Orne, Gabriel Johonnot, Henry D. Sewall, Henry Bromfield, Jr., Stephen Higginson, Jr., and Simon B. Robie.
